Fashion is the smallest stage one has with himself as the lead character. When there is interaction with others, it is drama, it is a shared moment. The designer, Kelvin Tam wanted to create that moment to share, to participate in the wearer's existence. As the collections are theme-based, every season has a differing storyboard - all with a consistent attitude: the men are sophisticated but mischievous, the women are elegant survivors.
Kelvin Tam studied Architecture at the University of New South Wales . After graduation, Kelvin was determined to drive his career to become a design architect and practicing in a leading Australian firm to achieved his goal through significant involvement in the masterplanning to designs for the Athens Olympics, RAIA award winning design L5 Building in UNSW and international competitions. After those formative years, Kelvin believed he possessed the creative vision and energy required to fulfil his passion in fashion and decided to establish his signature collection for silence is golden. This professional training has given Kelvin an acute conscientiousness in structure and sets out to achieve the delicate balance between his structured tailoring aesthetic along with fluid lines to create a subtle, yet undeniable femininity for his women's collections. Kelvin is also the passionate photographer behind every silence is golden campaign shoot which is of exceptional quality.
Winning Mercedes-Benz Start Up Award of Australian Fashion Week in 2006 with the debut collection of silence is golden is a true appreciation and recognition of his work. Not one to rest on his laurels, Kelvin has since been a successful participant in Australian Fashion Week, L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival and the Sydney Royal Easter Show. His last Spring Summer 08 collection has also raved reviews at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, cited by many as “one to watch” and “a standout”.
The current Autumn Winter collection ' The Door' travelled to New York to participate in G'Day USA to represent the Australian Fashion Industry in January 2008. This collection was greatly received by the US buyers and media. The same collection is lined up to show at the L'Oreal Fashion Festival in Melbourne in March 2008. Growing from strength to strength, silence is golden has presented the first individual show in Australian Fashion Week for the coming Spring Summer 09 ' The Woman' collection.
